Elisabeth Brambilla

Dr. Elisabeth Brambilla is a physician-scientist who has bridged expertise in lung cancer pathology and biology to make fundamental contributions with a major impact in the field of pathology, medical and radiation oncology and thoracic surgery. She has been a Professor of Pathology at the University Joseph Fourier Grenoble since 1993 nominated as exceptional class Professor in 2006 and is a world renowned expert in lung tumor pathology. As head of the Department of Pathology at the Grenoble University Hospital (1999-2012), she trained young pathologists from many countries. Her pioneering scientific accomplishments are reflected by her appointment as leader of an INSERM research team ”Lung Cancer progression”, and head of the Department “Oncogenesis and Biotechnologies” since 2007 at the Albert Bonniot Institute.

She has provided original scientific insight into the functional network of the P53 tumor suppressor pathway and tumor functional genomic profiling. She has provided seminal clinical and scientific descriptions of new lung pathological entities, particularly basaloid carcinoma, neuroendocrine lung tumors and lung adenocarcinoma. Her leadership has been demonstrated through specific projects involving international societies. Member of the IASLC Pathology Committee since 1997 and Chair from 2005 to 2009, member of the staging committee (2005-2009), she co-edited the WHO classification of lung tumors in 1999, 2004 and 2015. She co-chaired the Joint Task Force IASLC/ATS/ERS (2007-2011) for the 2011 Multidisciplinary International Classification of Lung Adenocarcinoma. She was head of the Cell and Molecular Assembly of the ERS (2005-2010), member of the Board of Directors of the IASLC (2007-2011) and president of the Pulmonary Pathology Society (2011-2013). She led successful international meetings including the1998 International Academy of Pathology Nice, France, the 2005 Pulmonary Pathology Society meetings in Annecy France and Grenoble in 2013. She serves on the Advisory Board of the German Aid program for development of Interdisciplinary Oncology Centers of Excellence in Germany and at DKTK (German tumor research consortium). She has received several prestigious awards including the IASLC Mary Matthews Award for lung pathologists Barcelona 2005, the Robert Totten Award Pennsylvania University 2010, the San Salvatore Award (ESMO 2013). She has a track record of 365 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 11,000 citations, 20 book chapters and is the editor of 5 books, and an associate editor of Lung Cancer.
